“This Government Will Not Tolerate Lawlessness”- PM Skerrit Announces Measures to Combat Gun Violence
Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has announced the establishment of a dedicated Firearms Task Force within the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force as part of a series of measures to combat gun violence in Dominica.
The taskforce, comprising personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department, Special Branch, Customs and Excise and the Dominica Coast Guard will focus exclusively on apprehending and prosecuting individuals involved in illegal firearms trafficking and use.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Prime Minister condemned what he described as “brazen and reckless acts” which have disrupted peace and endangered lives, saying his government would not tolerate lawlessness.
“We will not allow individuals with illegal firearms to destabilize our communities, endanger lives and undermine our national security,” the Prime Minister stated.
His comments come in the wake of violent incidents in the city of Roseau, which claimed the life of a young man from Canefield and left three others injured.
Effective immediately, the Government is also launching a confidential hotline at 1-800-8477 for the public to report illegal firearms or suspicious activities. A $1,000 reward will be given to anyone with information leading to the seizure of an illegal firearm or ammunition.
In addition, a limited amnesty period is being introduced to allow individuals in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition to surrender them without fear of prosecution.
Prime Minister Skerrit also announced the installation of a nationwide surveillance system, beginning in the capital city of Roseau. Foot and mobile patrols will also increase to maintain public confidence and reassure residents.
Additional measures include the engagement of a special prosecutor to handle gun-related cases and a ban on tinted windows for all rental vehicles.
The Prime Minister issued a direct warning to those involved in illegal gun activity.
“We will find you. We will disarm you. And we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. Dominica is a peaceful nation, and we will not permit our streets to become battlegrounds.”
He also called on citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement and see crime prevention as a collective national responsibility.
“This is our country, and we all have a role to play in keeping it safe. For our efforts to be successful we must all play our part. Fighting crime must be seen as a societal responsibility.
“Let us pledge today, in this moment, to put aside all differences and unite in defense of our country by rejecting the culture of violence. Let us show care and concern for our fellow citizens, ensuring that we can all continue to enjoy the peace and tranquility of our nature island home,” the Prime Minister said.
