Residents of Petite Soufriere, San Sauveur and Good Hope affected by a trough system earlier this month, will receive income support from the Government of Dominica, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced.
“Each family will get an allowance to support their families as income support. We will also be supporting farmers and businesses impacted by the trough system,” Prime Minister Skerrit said following a visit to the affected areas on November 15.
The Dominica Met Office reported that on November 6, a trough system dumped 13 inches of rain on communities in the East and South East of Dominica, causing major landslides and damage to roads, homes and other infrastructure. One man of Petite Soufriere, Henson Durand, died when a landslide covered his home.
“A long-term solution to this issue is with regards to relocating the residents of these communities. We are going to be putting in place a committee of leaders from Petite Soufriere, San Sauveur and Good Hope so that they can assist in identifying possible locations for relocation.
“The Government is fully committed to building these homes in safer communities as we have done with Petite Savanne and Dubique residents. The residents of the South East and Eastern districts of Dominica can rest assured that we have their back. We will fulfill that commitment to them as we have on numerous occasions before, having been subjected to natural disasters,” the Prime Minister said.
Mr. Skerrit said other interventions will include a new bridge for Rosalie, several new bridges along the Emerald Pool to Atkinson route, new water crossings and improved water catchment facilities.
