PM Skerrit looks out over potential site for relocation of Good Hope, Petite Soufriere residents in John’s Hill, Castle Bruce
The Government of Dominica has identified land in the Castle Bruce area for the resettlement of residents of Good Hope and Petite Soufriere.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit visited the site in John’s Hill, Castle Bruce last week accompanied by the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Melissa Skerrit, Parliamentary Representative for the Castle Bruce Constituency, Hon. Octavia Alfred, Director for Surveys and Commissioner of Lands, Marcus Lestrade, and Chief Physical Planner, Naomi Dorival.
“Last year I appointed a committee of senior public officers to assist with the preparatory work for the relocation of the residents of Petite Soufriere and Good Hope and part of their mandate was to identify possible sites or locations for resettlement. Luckily we were able to identify a potential site where there is about 27 acres of land in a place called John’s Hill in Castle Bruce,” Prime Minister Skerrit told a January 16 press conference.
“The advice coming from the Chief Physical Planner and the Chief Surveyor is that this site appears to be a possible site for the relocation. They are now conducting an environmental impact assessment because there are a number of variables one has to take into consideration before making a final determination on the lands,” Mr. Skerrit stated.
On November 6, 2022 heavy rainfall resulted in major landslides, damage to roads, homes and other infrastructure; and the death of one man of Petite Soufriere.
