The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China today awarded US$1,000 scholarships to 22 students currently enrolled at the Dominica State College (DSC), marking the third consecutive year of the programme.
In addition, three students who excelled in Chinese language studies through the DSC Confucius Classroom received special awards in recognition of their outstanding performance.
The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Programme is designed to motivate Dominican students to pursue academic excellence, enhance knowledge of Chinese language and culture and strengthen educational exchange and cooperation between Dominica and China.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the Minister of Education, Hon. Octavia Alfred thanked the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for their ongoing partnership in national development, particularly in the area of human resource. She noted that scholarships, training initiatives and technical support continue to contribute to Dominica’s efforts to build a skilled and competitive workforce.
“For many years, China has stood as a reliable development partner to Dominica. Through scholarship offerings, professional development opportunities, infrastructure investments and continuous support in various sectors, China has contributed significantly to the advancement of our human resource capacity and national growth. Not just in Education, but in health, agriculture and across the board in every sector.
“The Government of Dominica values this partnership deeply, and we recognize the impact of these scholarships in building a skilled, competitive and visionary Dominican workforce,” she said.
The Minister also highlighted major education projects underway with Chinese support, including the construction of five new primary schools and one secondary school, two of which will serve as Centres of Excellence for Special Education and Technical and Vocational Training.

Chinese Ambassador H.E. Chu Maoming commended the students for their hard work and encouraged them to pursue academic excellence and embrace opportunities for cultural learning.
“Young people represent our shared future and serve as both the inheritors and the driving force behind the friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Dominica. It’s my wish that you could link your personal growth and achievements to the friendship and cooperation between China and Dominica, and become envoys of bilateral friendship while realizing your own value,” he said.
The Ambassador confirmed that the annual Chinese Government and Chinese Ambassador Scholarships will continue into next year, along with additional cultural and educational programmes.
